How to Report an Email as Phishing in Outlook
What is phishing?
Phishing is a form of social engineering and scam where attackers deceive people into revealing sensitive information or installing malware. A very common method attackers use in phishing attempts is email.
What does a phishing email look like?
All phishing emails are different but can share some characteristics. While this list is not exhaustive, these are the most common red flags that indicate the email may be a phishing attempt:
- The sender email address is not familiar.
- The sender address looks familiar, but the email is requesting something out of the ordinary.
- The email is vague and not addressed directly to you (i.e. the email begins with “Dear User”).
- The email requests immediate and urgent action.
- The email contains a link or attachment.
What do I need to do?
If you are suspicious that you have received a phishing email:
- Do NOT open any attachments or click any links.
- Report the email as phishing in Outlook. This will send an alert to IT for investigation.
How to Report an Email as Phishing in Outlook
Outlook Client or Web Application
- With the email open, click the 3-dot icon in the actions bar for the specific email message.
2. From the menu, click Report and then click Report phishing.
3. In the Report phishing window, click OK to submit the phishing report.
Outlook iOS Application
- With the email open, tap the 3-dot icon for the specific email message.
